If you own a business and you have a marketing inbox, someone has pitched you at least one of these three acronyms in the last six months. AIO. AEO. GEO. Usually with a warning attached: SEO is dead, this is the new thing, sign here.
Here is the plain version of what each one means, where they overlap, and the part most of those pitches leave out.
Why These Exist at All
Search is not just ten blue links anymore. When someone searches Google, there is a good chance an AI-written summary sits at the top of the page answering their question before they ever see a website. And a growing share of people skip Google entirely and just ask ChatGPT, Gemini, or Perplexity things like "who is the best HVAC company near me" or "how much should a water heater replacement cost."
That shift has real consequences. When Google shows one of those AI summaries, the top ranked page below it gets dramatically fewer clicks than it used to. The traffic you fought for with traditional SEO can shrink even when your rankings hold steady, because the answer got delivered above you.
So the industry needed a name for the work of showing up inside those AI answers instead of just below them. It came up with three.
AEO: Answer Engine Optimization
AEO is the oldest of the three ideas. It grew out of featured snippets and knowledge panels, the boxes Google has shown for years that answer a question right on the results page.
AEO means structuring your content so a machine can lift a clean, direct answer out of it. Clear questions with clear answers underneath. Proper schema markup so the machine knows what it is looking at. Pages that say "a water heater replacement in the Midwest typically runs $1,800 to $4,500 installed" instead of burying the number in paragraph six.
If AI Overviews on Google are answering questions in your trade, AEO is the discipline aimed at being the source that answer gets pulled from.
GEO: Generative Engine Optimization
GEO points at the newer battlefield: the AI chat tools themselves. ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude. When someone asks one of those tools who to hire or what to buy, GEO is the work of making sure your business is the one it names and cites.
That work is less about your website alone and more about your whole footprint. These tools synthesize answers from many sources at once, so what matters is whether trusted places on the internet consistently say good things about you: your reviews, local directories, industry sites, press mentions, and yes, your own site too. GEO is closer to reputation building than to keyword tuning.
One thing worth knowing: the ranking factors for these AI tools do not map cleanly onto Google's. Ranking number one on Google does not guarantee ChatGPT ever mentions you, and businesses that are not number one on Google get recommended by AI tools all the time.
AIO: AI Optimization
AIO is the umbrella. Depending on who is using it, AIO either means "optimizing for AI search in general" (covering both of the above) or specifically optimizing for Google's AI Overviews. It is the least settled of the three terms, which tells you something about where this whole field is.
The Part the Pitches Leave Out
Now the straight answer: these three acronyms mostly describe the same work. There is no agreed standard separating them, and even the people selling these services use the terms interchangeably. One agency's GEO package is another agency's AEO package is another agency's AIO package. The industry invented three names for one discipline, then started selling each name as if it were a separate line item.
That does not make the discipline fake. The shift in how people find businesses is very real. It means you should judge any pitch by what is actually in the scope of work, not by which acronym is on the invoice. If someone tries to sell you AEO and GEO as two separate monthly retainers, ask them to explain the difference in deliverables. Watch what happens.
What Actually Moves the Needle
Whatever you call it, the work that gets a business into AI answers looks like this:
- Pages that answer real questions directly. The questions your customers actually ask, with the answer up front, not teased.
- Schema markup done right. Your services, service areas, pricing structure, reviews, and business info marked up so machines parse them cleanly.
- A consistent footprint beyond your site. Reviews, local listings, directories, and mentions on sites the AI tools already trust. The tools cross-reference; your story has to match everywhere.
- Genuine authority signals. Real reviews, real credentials, real specifics. These systems are getting better at telling substance from filler, and thin content gets skipped.
- Measurement. Tracking whether AI tools mention you, what they say, and whether they are getting it right. (No tracking here is perfect yet, this corner of the industry is young, but you can absolutely see whether you are showing up or invisible.)
The Only Acronym That Matters Is Revenue
For a home services business, none of this is the goal. The goal is the phone ringing and jobs getting booked. AI answers are just the newest place your next customer decides who to call, and the businesses that show up there will take calls from the ones that do not. Same game as the last twenty years of search, new referee.
AdStack™ builds this into the stack rather than selling it as a bolt-on acronym. Our AI search optimization work covers the answer structure, the schema, the footprint, and the tracking, and it ties back to the same conversion attribution we run on everything else, so you can see whether AI visibility is turning into booked revenue and not just take our word for it. Book a call and we will show you what the AI tools are currently saying about your business. Most owners have never looked. It is an interesting five minutes.
