Starting October 1, Google Will Charge You for LSA Calls You Never Answered

A missed Local Services Ads call during business hours becomes a paid lead on October 1 if the caller stays on the line 20 seconds. About five rings. Every unanswered ring now costs you twice, and the fix is not in your budget settings.

A ringing phone going unanswered while a Google Local Services Ads lead is billed

Starting October 1, Google will charge you for Local Services Ads calls you never answered.

Here is the rule. A missed call during your business hours becomes a billable lead if the caller stays on the line more than 20 seconds. Twenty seconds is about five rings. That is it.

The Second Piece People Are Missing

If the first call does not qualify as a charged lead, follow-up calls between you and that customer can be charged instead. So the meter did not stop. It just moved. A caller who hangs up at 15 seconds and rings back an hour later, or who you call back from the missed-call list, can turn into the billable lead the first attempt was not.

Stack It on What LSAs Already Do

Answer rate is already a ranking factor in Local Services Ads. Miss calls and you drop in the rankings, which means fewer leads at a higher effective cost. As of October 1, you also pay for the ones you missed on the way down.

Put a Number on It

Say your LSA leads run $80 and you miss twenty calls a month. That is not a high number for a shop with two people answering phones between jobs. That is $1,600 a month for conversations that never happened, plus the ranking hit, plus the jobs those callers gave to whoever picked up.

"Google's framing is that this rewards businesses that answer their phones," says AdStack's Matthew Hanni. "Fine. But the practical effect is that every unanswered ring now costs money twice. Once on the ad bill, and once in the job that walked to a competitor."

The Question Before October

It is a simple one: what happens right now when a call comes in and everyone is on a job? If the answer is voicemail, that is a line item on your ad bill in six weeks.

This lands on top of the LSA migration into Google Ads already underway for plumbing, HVAC, and pest control, so if you are in one of those categories you have two changes to get ahead of, not one.

Fix the Answering Before You Touch the Budget

The instinct is to pull spend or cap the daily budget. That does not fix anything. The leads you are being charged for are the ones nobody picked up, and a smaller budget just means fewer of them at a worse rank. Fix the answering first.

Whether that is an AI phone agent that picks up on the first ring and books the job, an answering service, or one more person on phones, the math changed and the deadline is real. Then use call tracking to prove the answer rate moved, because after October 1 that number is the one that decides what your LSA leads actually cost.

AdStack™ runs LSAs alongside PPC management and puts an AI receptionist on the line for service businesses that cannot staff the phone every hour they are open. If you want to know what your missed-call rate is costing you before October, book a call. We will answer it.
